*Mikirduit is an Indonesia-based investing community founded by Surya Rianto, a former capital markets journalist.*

At Mikirduit, we keep our investing approach flexible. We follow a clear plan, we pay attention to where the market is in its cycle, and we build our strategy around what individual investors do best: moving quickly and adapting. Here is how we think about it.

### Key Takeaways

1. **Never go all in at one price.** Buy in at least three stages, so one bad entry or a surprise drop doesn’t wreck the position.
2. **Size positions by risk.** Put the most money in value and dividend stocks, and keep growth, contrarian, and speculative bets small.
3. **Small positions keep you calm.** When an aggressive pick goes wrong, you can average down or cut losses without panic. Mikirduit also holds about 70% in cash right now.

### Our Core Toolkit in Indonesia

Indonesia has far fewer investment options than the United States, so we keep things simple. We use four rupiah-based assets:

- **Money market funds:** our cash position.
- **Fixed-income funds:** a step up from cash when the central bank’s interest rates are high and starting to fall. The goal is a better return than money market funds.
- **Stocks:** our high-risk asset.
- **Physical gold:** our safe haven.

We don’t use exchange-traded funds (ETFs) for long-term investing in Indonesia. The local ETF market has low trading volume and wide bid-ask spreads, which makes buying and selling too costly.

### Five Strategies for Indonesian Stocks

We sort Indonesian stocks into five strategies. Each stock gets a different level of confidence and a different share of our money.

1. **Value investing.** We look for cheap stocks whose core business is still growing and that have some market momentum. These are usually large and mid-sized companies, generally worth more than Rp5 trillion (roughly US$300 million).
2. **Growth investing.** We look for businesses with strong growth, short-term momentum, and share prices that haven’t become too volatile yet. These tend to be smaller companies valued under Rp5 trillion.
3. **Contrarian investing.** We look for stocks that have fallen so far that they look unreasonably cheap, even though earnings are declining. The bet is on a turnaround.
4. **Dividend investing.** We look for companies that pay dividends reliably. Each must have paid for at least three straight years, have a payout ratio of no more than 80%, still have room to grow, and trade at a reasonable discount.
5. **Speculative trading.** This covers market trends in Indonesia. In the past three years, shares of certain conglomerates have taken turns becoming the hot trade. We also watch companies being acquired for a “backdoor listing,” where a private company takes over a public one to go public without an IPO. These stocks are volatile and hard to trade in size.

Our core holdings are in value and dividend stocks, where we put the most money. Growth, contrarian, and speculative positions get smaller allocations.

### Our Most Important Rules

**Never go all in at one price.** We buy in stages, at least three times, depending on how each stock is behaving.

**Be patient, then take profits in steps.** We expect the best results by the second year, with gains that can exceed 30% before dividends. If a stock reaches a 30% gain in under 12 months, we start selling gradually and review each position as we go.

### Our Approach to U.S. Stocks

Our founder began buying U.S. stocks in 2021, when Gotrade expanded into Indonesia and made U.S. markets easier to reach. In January 2024, we began a gradual buying program and tried several strategies. Here is what happened.

#### 1\. Dividend Stocks

We bought AT&T (NYSE: T) and Realty Income (NYSE: O), a real estate investment trust (REIT). We used dollar-cost averaging (DCA) for one year, which means investing a fixed amount at regular intervals.

- **AT&T:** up 53% after dividends.
- **Realty Income:** up 10% after dividends.

#### 2\. Value Stocks: Centene (NYSE: CNC)

We bought Centene in three stages. The first purchase was on June 3, 2025, at $54.75 per share. Soon after, Centene slashed its earnings-per-share guidance from $7.25 to $1.75, and the stock fell about 40% in a single day.

We didn’t panic, because we had only put in a small amount at first. We then bought again in July 2025, at $31.92 and $29.00 per share.

We sold on April 29, 2026, at $51 per share, for a gain of roughly 56%.

#### 3\. Momentum Stocks: Datadog (NASDAQ: DDOG)

On February 23, 2026, we bought Datadog at $106.38 per share. Our reasoning was an educated guess. Anthropic, the company behind Claude, was hiring people with experience in Datadog’s products, which suggested it might become a customer. At the same time, there were rumors that Datadog had landed an eight-figure contract with an unnamed company. The two clues together made us think Anthropic could be that customer.

We sold on May 11, 2026, at $200.88 per share, a gain of roughly 88%.

#### 4\. The S&P 500 ETF

We also use an S&P 500 ETF as a core holding. Its risk is easier to measure than that of a single stock. The trade-off is that its upside is usually more limited than a single stock that takes off. We currently hold one S&P 500 ETF.

### Do We Ever Lose Money?

Yes. We bought shares of Vale S.A. (NYSE: VALE) in September 2024 and added to the position twice in December 2024\. The thesis was simple: the stock looked cheap and paid an attractive dividend.

We sold in March 2025 at a 5.24% loss. After counting dividends, the loss shrank to about 2%.

[Pfizer (PFE) Dividend Outlook: Can the 5-6% Yield Last?Pfizer (NYSE: PFE) offers a dividend yield of about 5-6 percent, but patent expirations, rising competition, and falling EPS cloud the outlook. Here is what investors should weigh.![](https://us.mikirduit.com/content/images/icon/Mikirduit-5f135b7f-9714-4d92-93c5-70a84769b459.jpg)Mikirduit USSurya Rianto![](https://us.mikirduit.com/content/images/thumbnail/PFE-stock-3c152c5d-0d68-431a-810d-b9a4dd2a17cc.jpg)](https://us.mikirduit.com/pfizers-outlook-and-risks-can-it-still-pay-a-5-6-percent-annual-dividend/)

### Our Takeaway

We combine conservative and aggressive strategies and manage risk through how much we invest and how we buy. This can mean we make less than we could when a stock skyrockets. But it also protects us when an aggressive pick doesn’t go as planned.

Because we keep our aggressive positions small, we can think clearly about what to do when a trade goes wrong. We can average down (buy more at a lower price) or cut our losses, and averaging down is much easier when the position is small.

Right now, about 70% of our portfolio is in cash. We’ll be sharing the full stories behind more of our stock picks, and newsletter subscribers will also see the stocks on our watchlist.
